“Coming in from the Cold”

The 2012 election was won because millions of American women collectively decided to “come in from the cold” of gender inequality – by marching to ballot boxes across America to have their voices heard. For months prior to the election – American women were forced to listen to our elected officials utter condescending and dehumanizing beliefs and opinions about our rights to make our own decision over our own bodies - in a 24/7 media loop. It was torture. How many American women actually felt ”tortured” during these months?

Did that US Senator say : “A woman’s body knows [independently of her mind and heart and reproductive organs] how to shut that whole rape pregnancy down….” Really ??? And did another elected official actually insinuate that: “a pregnancy from RAPE is a GIFT from GOD?” Really??? Sheer Torture.

Wasn’t it actually torturous to live through a Presidential Platform that boasted : “On day one of my Presidency – l will shut down Planned Parenthood – right after I select pro-life judges that can over turn Roe V Wade on Day 2 of my Presidency?”

Autonomy is a fundamental & universal human right and the first pillar of freedom in any democratic society. In a recent conversation online, I was reminded of a ruling affirming each individuals right to bodily autonomy in the “Mcfall v Shimp” case where in 1994 the US Senate ratified the UN Convention On Torture. The legal language in Article 1 Sec 9 defines Torture as:

“The intentional infliction of severe mental or physical pain or suffering by, or with the consent of state authorities for a specific purpose. Methods of torture includes rape sexual assault and forced pregnancy/childbirth”

The over 1,110 pieces of legislation -some extending “person-hood” at the moment of conception and others mandating doctors to force a woman to listen to the heartbeat of a fetus she decided to terminate – with a vaginal probe – while the doctor reads to her and forces her to look at ultrasound screen as well as to outlawing contraceptive and criminalizing abortion in every situation except “legitimate Rape and incest” - fits perfectly into the above definition of Torture.

Even the mention of these “legislation’ now – after millions of women came in from the cold of gender inequality indeed feels like Torture to my American~ness!

Yes- with the 2012 US Presidential elections -American women are coming in from the cold – but we must never ever be lulled back into that place where we took our freedoms to P.A.C.E (Privacy, Access, Choice & Equality) for granted. We must never forget – and remember those very elected officials who were presumptuous enough to speak on behalf of an American woman and those who remained silent and refused to stand up and speak on behalf of respect for all women.
